Stourport is a “Heritage Inland Port”

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Stourport-on-Severn has been awarded Heritage Inland Port status alongside cities such as Exeter and Chester!

We hope that this formal recognition will further stimulate tourism around the canal basins and within the town itself, focus more attention on the heritage of the town for tourists and local people and underline the importance of our local heritage when planning decisions are to be made.

Heritage Stourport

This change has been promoted by Heritage Stourport, which was formed through a partnership of Stourport Forward, Stourport Civic Society, Stourport Yacht Club, the Inland Waterways Association, Stourport Town Council and several Town Councillors, and other interested local people who saw the benefit of applying for Heritage Inland Port Status.

What is a Heritage Harbour or Inland Port?

The historic Georgian Canal Basins, which connect the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal to the River Severn at the heart of Stourport, have shaped the history and development of the town. Just as the harbours and ports along our coasts, rivers and canals, the canals are a key part of the national story.

Heritage Harbours is a joint initiative between National Historic Ships UK, Historic England and the Maritime Heritage Trust to help safeguard and conserve our most historic locations including the buildings, quays, shipyards, and environments that make them so special. These are the places on the coast and inland where you can see traditional ships and boats still in operation and the buildings, facilities and people that make that possible.
